The contract is always only for 1 season at a time, and get's renewed each time. Ecclestone and the Production team had beef with each other from day one. He was going through a lot in his personal life (father dying, and struggles with anorexia), throw in on-set disputes and he basically told them they are only getting one season out of him. The BBC did him a dirty and announced David Tennant as the new Doctor before Ecclestone's first episode even aired. Billie Piper, who saw Ecclestone as a mentor (this was her first television role), said she was leaving too. Ecclestone himself convinced her to stay, saying she shouldn't jeopardize her future over his issues. David Tennant is, to most, the quintessential Doctor of the revived series (Tom Baker takes that title for the Classic series) and is often at the top of "favorite Doctor" polls. He definitely sticks around for a lot longer than Ecclestone and quickly cements himself in place as the Doctor. I think you'll enjoy his version. To answer your question, the Doctor does retain the memories (mostly), and is the same person but personalities do change, along with appearance. Excited to get into season 2 with you.
