2022-03-08 15:53:22 +0000 UTCso most saturation should only be increasing the overall loudness via additional harmonics (not adding gain) and therefore you don't need to gain stage by ear but rather to offset any input drive. In other words, you would only decrease the output if you were achieving the saturation by driving the signal. These aren't firm rules though, at the end of the day gain staging is about making sure you're hearing the "effect" and not just extra gain
