Yep, you can sidechain in soothe to do a similar thing to duck certain competing freqs with the vocals. & I agree re: smooth and wide! Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm on FL Studio, so unfortunately don't have expression control, but looks like I can do a similar thing just linking macros to different knobs. Hopefully can somehow enter a min and max % value for the range and automate that, but will have to look into it more.

1. In this case I think I chose it because I was keeping the bass fairly low/deep so there wasn’t a ton of midrange content to really poke out if I was to just filter the lows. Similar to the reason for having the extra layer in the first place. 2. There’s a bunch of other modulators within expression control you should explore too, but usually I either think about the specific goal I’m trying to achieve and/or try a few. If I want it to be relatively random I’ll use random but maybe I want to have control via mod wheel and thus would use that. Or sometimes keytracking makes sense when mapping to certain things if you want higher or lower notes to have a different timbre. 3. So soothe and trackspacer are somewhat different tools though I believe the new version of soothe has sidechain? One of the reps told me that if I remember correctly but I haven’t used it for that….but if so I imagine then it would be pretty similar, but I would keep the two parameters low so that the dips are smooth and wide rather than narrow and surgical. Trackspacer is often on sale for only $30 or so though, I’d keep an eye out and try to pick it up regardless

Great walkthrough! Thank you - a few questions: 1. Is that a common practice where you’ll use a synth layer in lieu of a groove bass you take out, instead of just removing the lows of the groove bass for that section? Or did you just feel the sounds of the bass/synth were similar enough to warrant it here & keep the sound interesting? 2. Never used expression control - it looks awesome. How do you decide whether to use random, modwheel or key track. Do certain envelopes always work better with a specific parameter? (like you had key track on for decay - guess I’m not sure why those 2 fit together) 3. Do you prefer trackspacer to soothe 2 / are they more or less doing the same thing?
