Hey Everyone,
Here with another session starting a track from scratch. I was going through Tracklib again checking some new vocal multitracks they uploaded and decided to experiment with heavily processing a RnB style vocal for something hooky but mangled that I could make the feature in a darker track.
I start messing with the vocal part for the first 9 minutes and then begin using the Euclidean Sequencer M4L device to make an arp pattern. Notice once I've got a pattern I like, I put the M4L device on a new midi channel and route that to my arp instrument channel to record the sequence to MIDI so I can fine tune it further by hand. This technique can be super useful with any type of sequencer or arpeggiator where you want a bit more customization.
I then start building the groove, trying to line up notes in the bass and certain perc hits with the same rhythm of the arp. Everything continues to evolve throughout the hour--I even end up double-timing the arp and changing the sound design. Some stuff hits the wall and sticks, other stuff doesn't. At the end I'm messing with a lead idea but don't think it will play a prominent role (maybe just background pads later on).
Going forward I imagine I'm gonna have to relentlessly cut out a lot and will probably use the vocal more sparingly...I think this is a good example of an hour session where I still haven't totally tapped into what the song wants to be yet (and that's fine for only an hour of tinkering). Stay tuned!
