Frequently Given Feedback #6 - Sidechain Compression

1. I'm not sure, but also not sure that it matters--since you can audition the signal post-EQ (and the way its effecting the compressed signal) its really just something to be done by ear. My guess is 12db filter 2. I usually try to match the attack (just around 1ms) but release is kinda dependent on what you're doing. When its just bass ducking for the kick as mentioned in the video, the release is usually around 30/35ms for both 3. Not when sidechaining. I want that to be as transparent as possible so I can dial it in without distraction--any color can come beforehand with one of those compressors. 4. Hmm might be worth checking the manual..for peak vs RMS though you can try both and see what works best--I think for kick sidechaining though peak makes more sense

Another great FGF! Wanted to ask a few questions I've had since watching this. 1. What is the db slope of the hi & lo cut curves for the EQ that's built into Ableton's compressor? The Logic stock compressor doesn't show it (and I don't think the Ableton compressor does either unless I'm not seeing it). I see you can change the Q value (same with Logic), which it makes sense to me to leave at .71 for sidechaining so that you're not boosting or taming any frequencies. I'd assume the EQ curve is like 48db or higher just based on where you're putting your frequency knob, but curious to know if you can change the slope in Ableton or if you know what it is by default. 2. Do you always want to match the attack and release of the EQ'd sidechain compressor and Trackspacer when using them in tandem? I figure in the end I should just be using my ears on this, but I'm wondering if it's even worth the time to mess around with the attack and release of each of them separately. 3. Do you ever find yourself using any non-transparent compressor models when sidechaining? e.g. the Logic compressor has models emulating the SSL G bus, 1176 Rev E & H, Teletronix LA-2A, Focusrite Red 3, & DBX 160. iirc you have some of these in your plugin collection so I'm wondering if you ever mess around with adding a little bit of color/character to your sidechain compression. (Although as I'm typing this I'm wondering if you even have the ability to do sidechain compression with the 3rd party real versions of those compressors). 4. Lastly, in the EQ section of the Logic compressor there's the option of either Max or Sum along with the option of Peak or RMS. Tbh, I have no idea what Max or Sum means here and couldn't hear a difference when I A/B'd them. So just wondering which you'd pick if you know anything about this.

Using side-chain as a rhythmic tool at 25' is a really useful idea, also drives home the point of tuning the compressor settings so it not only works mix-wise but also groove-wise. Thanks!
