That's a great question and an important consideration! In cases like those I think it's best to try to distinguish the idea against the execution, and try your best to stay close to the idea while improving on the way you execute it, which can be a pretty subtle distinction. You also just have to consider what the client's like (often based on prior experience), some have you stay really close in line with the original sketch, and others let you deviate from it a bit more. This is something you'll figure out over the course of working with them. So, in short, you'll usually have to adjust to the clients requests more or less, but I would generally try my best to improve upon the sketches (at least in terms of the execution) unless they explicitly discourage it. Then they choose one, and then you're let's say "redrew" sketch in a bit different direction on line stage. Isn't it harmful for your working process or are you clients know that it could happen between this two stages? How you deal with clients expectations when you have client work, this is the main idea of the question. TY

2025-09-06 17:30:29 +0000 UTCYeah, i actually work really similarly even when im leaving the lineart in the final, but some of that has to do with the style of linework i usually do, which is a bit sketchy, like you said It also probably takes a lot of time to get used to drawing with no undersketch and also erasing and re-drawing Its certainly not the only viable approach drawing this way, but there are takeaways you can apply even when working on a separe final inking layer, and if nothing else, its just some food for thought 🙏

However, in this video you use linework as a means to an end, meaning you do get rid of them in the painting stage. Do you think this way of working is still viable when you have linework in the final result? I will try this out, but I feel like the linework still might be too sketchy, because I won’t have any underdrawing when redrawing everything.
