A little lore backstory for people who are not familiar with Zhong Kui. He studied and passed the imperial exam of the Tang Dynasty. One of the only ways a peseant can ascend the social ladder to become a government official. This is an exam that takes a full decade to prepare for. You have to pass a few local preliminary exams and then head to the capital to take the full exam. (This is out of your own pocket in medieval times, so also a very expensive preparation process) Zhong Kui was leagues ahead of everyone else and was summoned for an audience with the emperor. However, Zhong Kui was too ugly. So, the emperor revoked his first place on the spot. Out of rage, Zhong Kui suicided. When he went to hell, the god of hell saw his ability, and made him the king of ghosts to help with administrative affairs.
