Act 53
Mary
The remainder of the date unfolded just as smoothly and enticingly. Even more so, considering that they knew they were experiencing it as an official couple.
They finished lunch and dessert, then relaxed for a while in the quaint garden, resting in the late-afternoon sun on a picnic blanket while enjoying music on Maryâs smartphone. SShe had asked Mel what she wanted to hear, and she suggested Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra and Julie London. Mary hadnât known about the two female vocalists before, but they sounded amazing. Their voices and tunes wonderfully complemented the atmosphere.
After taking another short stroll to the local store to get some candy, they went back home to play some board games in front of the cozy fireplace while conversing about delightfully unimportant topics and munching on the confectionery.
Others might have considered it boring, maybe. But it was everything to Mary. Overwhelmingly exciting in its own way. And it seemed to fill her date - no, her girlfriend - with joy, too.
With this, the afternoon went by, replaced by a lighthearted evening, then a warm spring night. Mary didnât just feel like her presence was nothing more but a footnote in somebody else's story, like usual; but that she was welcomed to take room in another personâs life. That she was welcomed to stay.
Eventually, though, Mel brought her back to reality and dampened the magic a little by saying:
âMarijntje, as much as I enjoy our evening, itâs getting rather late and Iâm worried that you donât get enough sleep because of me.â
âYou donât have to worry about that at all,â Mary quickly replied nervously, but then she realized something. âBut⊠wait. I am worried about you. You have a performance tomorrow, right? Oh gosh, Iâm so sorry, I completely forgot about it.â
Melodie laughed, but in a sweet, calming way. âWhy, donât worry. It wonât be too late if we go upstairs now.â
âGo to upstairs nowâ, her words echoed in Maryâs brain, activating strong sensations all over her body.
Melodie was under the assumption that they would sleep here. Together. In one bed. As an official couple now.
She couldnât even look at the bedroom before because the mere thought was too much, hearing Melodie talk about it so casually made Mary dizzy.
Her breathing became more labored. She could actually feel drops of sweat starting to gather on her forehead.
She scratched her head to conceal the fact that she was cleaning them off.
âThatâs the thing, I havenât rented it for the night,â Mary said.
âAh, that wonât be an issue, my little dove. Iâll resolve it with the owners tomorrow and come up for the new expenses.â
She was such a sweet gentleman.
âThatâs⊠thatâs not it. I just canât.â
Melodie looked at her questioningly, waiting patiently for Mary to continue.
She wasnât sure how to. She didnât want to end the date on another streak of sorrow, but she also didnât want to owe Melodie an explanation. So eventually, she decided to talk.
âMy father wouldnât allow it. Heâs always so worried about me, and always wants to make sure that Iâm close to him, especially at night. And if Iâm not, at least one one of our domestic aids should be. Our secretary, for example.â
Melodieâs expression was impossible to read. She just looked at Mary, not responding, clearly having thoughts of her own. Hopefully she didnât hate Maryâs father right now.
âBelieve me, Iâd love to stay here with you. For a night, a week, even longer. And Iâm sure Iâll get there. I just donât want to overwhelm my dad. Itâs all new to him, too. And Iâm sure once he trusts you, he will be okay with me staying with you.â
For a moment, it looked as if Melodie wanted to comment on something. She dropped it, however.
It made Mary even more anxious. âPlease donât be sad or angry at him. I know this all sounds unusual. Probably worse than it is. Which it really isnât. Iâm sorry I ended our date with such a glum topic.â
âIt doesnât have to end right now, my love.â
âBut, your performance -â
âI can handle it. Sometimes I stay up till the morning hours, practicing tricks or being forced into some boring, but important celebrity get-togethers. So staying up a little while longer for my girlfriend is a pleasant matter of course.â
Mary wanted to disapprove, but Melodie didnât let her, saying instead: âHow about we watch a movie to complete the evening? You still owe me one with Marlene Dietrich.â
Mary gave in. Gladly.
They cuddled up close on the couch, with a blanket wrapped around them. Melodie sitting upright, Mary with her naked feet pulled up, leaning sideways onto the tall magician, taking in her warm body and alluring scent.
Mel even took Maryâs hand and placed it on her firm bump, taking away any potential inner struggles Mary mightâve come across during the movie. She did it with such casualness that Mary almost didnât feel any embarrassment.
The black and white movie âShanghai Expressâ was of antiquated quality and ideology, though Marlene Dietrich was, indeed, enticing.
Everything was so comfy, making Mary feel safe and protected, that she soon fell asleep while gently stroking Melâs belly, missing out most of the movie.
When she woke up again her surroundings had changed; Cold air and darkness caressed on her face, like a sheer piece of silk, and the tinny voices of the ancient actors had been replaced with a steady mechanical hum.
Groggily, she noticed that she was in Melodieâs car, wrapped in her own poncho that she had gifted to Melodie on their second date, and another warm blanket that smelled weirdly charmingly like mothballs, old wood and Melodie.
Who, sitting as handsome and dashing as usual next to her behind the wheel, noticed her awakening. She lifted her hand from the gear shift and snuggled it between the warm fabrics to hold Maryâs hand.
âGo back to sleep, my love.â
How did she get here? What had happened to the cottage? Mary wanted to ask, but overpowered by almost unnatural tiredness, she only managed to mumble a few incoherent words.
âI took care of everything, donât worry.â
And it truly sounded like she did, putting Mary back to ease. She wanted to use the last remaining moments to talk, connect, or at least enjoy Melodieâs presence a little longer - but she was just too tired. Too intoxicated with Melodieâs absolutely safe presence, that left her no choice but to give in.The last thing she saw was her charming smile full of care and the tiny little snake poking its head out under the blankets, then she fell back into a deep, relaxed sleep.
The next time she woke up was in the early morning, in her bed, alone, in her hotel room.
