Especially with all the blockbusters we have these days, all it takes is 3 weeks filming, low budget, Great actors and a brilliant story that hits like a truck. The church organ music and final scenes are a masterclass. Paddy's performance should be studied in drama schools " was he calling for me was he screaming my name ( yeah he was ) He still is". I watched it in the cinema recently for the 20 year anniversary and was ridiculous as I never seen it on the big screen before. Great reaction king glad you love it.

2024-03-14 02:59:39 +0000 UTCHello Mr King lol, i hope you read this because having just seen your reaction to this, i must recommend a film directed by Paddy Considine called Tyrannosaur. It is not about dinosaurs and the title is explained in the film, it stars Olivia Coleman who is outstanding in this (sheโs always excellent) and Peter Mullan (Ozark and many excellent films). It is an amazing and powerful little film. I think the less said about it the better but it shares some similarities to Shane Meadows films like Dead Manโs Shoes and This Is England. I have to warn you if you decide to see it, It is hard hitting but well worth seeing. Even if you have to watch it in your own time away from the camera please see it. Have a good day ๐

2024-01-21 21:12:20 +0000 UTCJust upgraded to movies and had to watch this straight away when I saw you've done it :D This is the town of Matlock in Derbyshire, amazing and stunning place on the edge of the 'Peak District' in central England. Plenty of mountains and countryside to explore if you ever come over. The castle building which Is seen many times during the movie and serves scene of the suicide/murder is Riber Castle, which overlooks Matlock. I have memories as a child of visiting when it was a zoo :D Sadly, it has been been converted into apartments, but is still worth a walk up, along with many places in the area :)

2023-12-21 22:19:37 +0000 UTCAfter you figure out the twist, you want to watch it again, and on the 2nd viewing you notice that NOBODY interacts, speaks or sees his brother outside of the flashbacks because he isn't really there. the film was hinting at it a number of times but you never pick up on it during your first watch.

Would be interested to see your views on 'Tyrannosaur' (Paddy Considine's directorial debut.) And Olivia Coleman's most powerful performance, in my opinion.

Talking of countryside I highly recommend Detectorists a great light hearted comedy set around metal detecting starring Mackenzie Crook (The Office UK, Pirates of the Carribean) and Toby Jones (Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom).

Iโve seen a couple of American reactions to this film but for me yours has been the best given how ingrained in our culture you have become so could feel how into it you were (you even managed without subtitles which was brave), particularly the appreciation of the Derbyshire countryside (even if as a Welshman I will let the non-mention of the fatherland slide ๐ ). Your citizenship is surely a foregone conclusion now lol. Thereโs an interesting fan theory on this film which is: it was all in Richardโs head. The final moment where he lay bleeding is him in the battlefield having gone back into combat after the funeral. The film is his fantasy of retribution. It would explain how easily he ducked and weaved into the gangโs properties undetected in such short time and why Sonny missed him with his rifle and didnโt shoot again (something you picked up on). My only critique (in the interests of genuine feedback) is you paused during the final scene just as it got into its crescendo which stilted it, to give your prediction of the hanging. That last bit should never be paused given how fantastic a scene it is and personally I find it frustrating watching a film with some of my mates who donโt just let things run/be present and are trying to ruin endings for themselves by predicting things. You could have just told us thatโs what you thought was coming when you did your really good conclusion. Thatโs just me though, otherwise a stellar reaction

Anyway, this was a erm... not sure if pleasure is the correct word, but I am glad that you've seen it and understand how powerful it is - it was a privilege to watch it with you. There's a hell of a lot of things going on here, too much to talk about here without an essay. I don't watch it very often, but every time I do it completely kicks the wind out of me. It's a phenomenal achievement on every level. Not for the feint hearted though, or those who don't like their views on a few things challenged. Thankfully you're not one of those people. Saw this at the cinema on release back in 2004. My mate and I left that screening in silence and didn't say a word to each other until we managed to find a pub that was open. Then with some stiff, strong drinks to help, talked about it for ages until the pub threw us out at closing time. Can't believe that was nearly 20 years ago now. I feel old.

"Dead Man's Shoes is based on the more unpleasant side of his youth in Uttoxeter. It was inspired by a close friend who had been bullied, developed a drug problem and then committed suicide. Meadows said "I couldn't believe that, going back ten years later, he had been totally forgotten in the town โ it was as if he had never existed. I was filled with anger against the people who had bullied and pushed the drugs on him, and with despair at what drugs had done to that small community."

2023-07-19 11:07:29 +0000 UTCI was listening to a podcast the other day that had the young lad from this is England (all grown up now). He said all Shane Meadows films are unscripted. Other than a storyline and loose direction for the scene everything was improv. He said it was to give the impression of real human interactions instead of perfectly scripted interactions. When you realise this is done in the same way it hits home quite how good this film is and why it feels so so real.

It's one of the most influential British movies ever, which is a brilliant mix of comedy and action. It also has a young Michael Caine in his prime. Well worth checking out, if you haven't seen it.

2023-07-18 23:00:10 +0000 UTCThe ruins (the wrecked old building) are 'Riber Castle' circa early 19th Century, and it overlooks Matlock where this was filmed. Matlock is a small town in the county of Derbyshire which is a County in the centre of England, also known as 'The Midlands'. Derbyshire is a beautiful County with an area within it called 'The Peak District' which is very popular with hikers etc. I live about 20 miles away in the neighbouring County of Nottinghamshire. I agree that this is an excellent film, British film making at its best, glad you enjoyed it KB.

When they are dark they are very dark but also closely related to reality, it's sometimes very rough in the midlands. Some of his films can be funny but also brutal. I am so happy you watched this one I would recommend Twenty-Four Seven from 1997 for something lighter with Bob Hoskins and of course This is England.

A lot are amateur actors.The scenes are half improvised around an idea as he tries to get an authentic dialogue from the actors. Many well known actors from working class back grounds got their break in Shane Meadows films.

I caught it one night on TV purely by chance after a friend had recommended it and couldn't turn away, Shane Meadows films manage to be hilarious, dark, and utterly compelling all at the same time. I also recommend - not necessarily for a reaction, just to watch - A Room For Romeo Brass, an earlier Meadows film that was Paddy Considine's first starring role, and features several other Meadows regulars in early roles.
