Always thought it was a little weird he was in the sky flying the next scene, but I think this is plausable) edit: Arcing like in the Saiyan Saga and pulling up.

It was very implied Cell's beam struggle win would blow up earth. Unless they meant cell would just beat gohan then destroy earth.
