If you guys watch Naruto Shippuden afterwards you should start with Kakashi Chonicles (which is Shippuden ep 119 and 120) the story flows better and answer a lot of questions about Kakashi.

Naruto has been getting special personal training from one of the legendary sannin themself, so it makes sense that Naruto's growth would sudden start to outpace Sasuke's. That's where Orochimaru comes in because he's also a sannin, so in Sasuke's mind he probably thinks he can get power from him in a similar way abit Orochimaru's methods for getting stronger are much more dangerous and unethical.
