As you pointed out, it's a little easier to follow the movie if you know that it's a retelling of the Odyssey (for example, it makes more sense if you know that John Goodman is supposed to represent Polyphemus the Cyclops). This movie has one of the best soundtracks of any modern movie. The set design and costuming people also do a great job recreating the time period.
