George Carlin used to do a bit where he would say phrases that nobody has ever said before. One of them was "do what you want to the girl, but leave me alone!" These days, sadly, there are probably some guys that would actually say that...π

#1 rule in movies: If you didn't witness the actual death... did they actually die?

I don't know about her, but my girlfriend won an all-expense paid trip to Cancun for two people years ago after winning a singing competition. I couldn't go, but rather than sell the tickets I told her she should take her girlfriend. (No, I wasn't worried one tiny bit about her going to Cancun without me. Trust was earned and trust was given.)
Anyways, she always wanted to skydive so she did so in Cancun. She said it was a TINY rickety old plane that had no seats in the back. She and her friend had to sit on the floor of the plane as they took off into the air. They did the tandum jump - which consisted of only a couple minutes of training before hand. No certification necessary. A bit crazy, IMO...
Needless to say, she made it back safe, so yay for her I suppose! She got some nice photos and an awesome story to tell.

That's one step away from hiding behind you. LOL! Jumping on a jump scare is not unusual, but a guy yelping and grabbing your arm... yeesh!
Wait, you said a FIRST date. Does that mean you gave the guy a second date?! You might be too kind... haha!

That's awesome so envious! Did you have to Tandom jump with a proffessional? IF I recall, you are not allowed to jump on your one until you get certified? do you plan on doing more jumps? also next time if you do, share some pics with us!

I'm glad you survived the movie, Dasha. It's a real nightmare even without the people-eating gremlins. I can't say I've ever been spelunking (cave exploring) but I had the opportunity to take a cave tour through a beautiful cavern in southern Arizona. There was no belly-crawling required, only paved walkways and steps. At one point in the tour they turn the lights off so you can experience the utter darkness, which was impressive. I'd recommend it as a life experience.

You mentioned you like adrenaline related activities. Have you been sky diving and bungie jumping yourself?

Very true. It's also in our DNA, I believe. We didn't go through countless millennia performing that role in our social groups without it being a part of who we are. Even today, we still admire stories of men who gave their last breath protecting those they love. If you're going to go, is there a better way? That reminds me... I heard a story from a woman once that she was walking down the street with her boyfriend after being out at the bars and a guy approached them and pulled out a gun to rob them. She said her boyfriend IMMEDIATELY took off running and left her. She said that afterwards she could not go back into that relationship cause she lost all respect for him. No shit. Yeesh...

I actually enjoy exploring caves and lava tubes. One time I went with a buddy who at that time had been in the army for about 15 years. He had to lower his head and squeeze through a small passage to get to the other side. As soon as he did that, he came face to face with a bat and he started screaming loudly and flailing his arms all over the place. It almost turned into a mini version of that scene from Batman Begins except looking back at it now a lot more funny.

Yeah, everyone wants to feel needed. It's just that different folks want to be needed for different things. Nobody ever wants to feel like a Star Trek red shirt guy, an expendable Mr Hansen...π

That was the reaction I expected it to be! No spoilers Dasha, but there is a sequel. You do get to see the storyline continue from where it left off. If you liked this one, I'd recommend the Descent Part 2.

I agree, Troy. I don't know a man who doesn't like the feeling of being respected as a protector. Not just for your woman, but for others, including yourself. There is a reason heroic sacrifice is a popular narrative among men. It's the fulfilment of the ultimate duty of a good man.

Holy moley, what a reaction! Dasha, my apologies if I get too psychological here, but this one got me thinking about reactions in general. There's a particular thrill, if you are a male, to being with a woman while she watches a horror movie. I think a lot of the guys here would admit they enjoy having a woman squeezing their arm, burying her face in their shoulder, when something scary shows up on the screen. It's a natural thing for us, as it comes out of our wanting to protect the people we love. I think sometimes these days we don't get enough opportunities to feel like men, and this takes us back to a much more basic and primal feeling. I don't think that's a bad thing. That being said, thanks for taking one for the team.. π
I certainly understand your claustrophobia from this. While I can appreciate the beauty of nature from spelunking, I don't much like the idea of being trapped 100 ft underground between two huge slabs of rock. It's kind of like the way I feel about skydiving; I've never felt the need to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. π
The beginning of this movie reminded me that you really should watch the rest of the Final Destination movies. It's one of my favorite horror series, and I really enjoyed your reaction to the first one,, and they really work best if you see all of them. I would dearly love to see your reaction to the rest.
I think another movie you may want to check out is called 127 hours from 2010. It has some of the same kind of feelings of tension as The Descent, and it's based on a true story.
Again, thanks for sharing this reaction with us. The fact that you are visibly affected by these horror movies, but you brave your way through them anyway, tells me that despite what you may think, you are as tough as hell. π
