Jason, what series is that? I punched in "modern" on Prime and got several things, including "Modern Family". Which one are you referring to?

Yes the modern is much better. Itβs on Amazon prime and itβs one of my top 5 series of all time. It does drag in parts but itβs def worth the grind for the total story. Truly a great series!!

Troy, if you like High Fantasy, I recommend the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks. The magic system in it is my favorite magic system of all time. It's based upon light.
The magic users are called chromatic "drafters" and they have the ability to absorb light and turn it into a magic form when they release the light. What is cool, is that each drafter can only draw certain light waves. So you could be a red drafter, blue drafter, green drafter, etc. Each color on the spectrum has different properties when it is released.
Most drafters can only draft 1 color, but more rare are "bichromes" who can draft 2 colors. Even more rare are the "polychromes", those who can draft 3 or more colors along with the effects that correspond to them.
There is only 1 drafter in a generation on the planet who can draft the full spectrum of light. That person is called the "Prism" and they're regarded as the King of the empire. It's a really different and cool concept.

If you decide to read some science fiction short stories, a good place to start is the Harlan Ellison edited compilation Dangerous Visions. It's got a ton of great stories from major science fiction authors, and it was the book that really launched the idea of modern speculative fiction (because obviously not all such stories contain hard science fiction). I remember one summer as a kid sitting on the porch swing and reading it and the sequel collections that followed.
And yeah, I enjoy the fantasy stuff as well, and I've also played enough d&d to wear down the edges on my 20-sided dice...π

I can't say that I've read many Sci-Fi books. I did read the Silo series by Hugh Howey before it became a TV Series. (I haven't seen the TV Series, either). I liked the books a lot.
I have always been more of an Epic Fantasy reader. A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) was one, but I also really enjoyed the Kingkiller Chronicles, The First Law Trilogy, the Lightbringer series, and the Stormlight Archive to name a few. Of course I read a lot D&D Epic Fantasy as well. Everyone that is into Fantasy has read Tolkien.
As far as Good vs Evil and Gray themes... I can watch both. I grew upon GvE themes. When I read my first morally gray stories they felt a bit more grown up and real, but it wasn't too long before my soul just felt tainted by it, in a way. Those themes give you a feeling that is more bleak and dirty.
I don't think I'd ever want only one theme or the other. I'd like there to be options for both themes. If there could be only one, I think I would lean towards GvE, because they inspire more hope. I like the feeling of being inspired and being pulled towards something pure more than I like dwelling in the darkness of a morally gray world.

I unapologetically prefer stuff that defines good and evil pretty clearly. As I said, I am not a postmodern kind of guy (it has been sad that the anti-hero is postmodern man's way of saying "I give up"). It may be the reason that I prefer older stuff as far as novels, TV shows, movies, etc. That's not to say that there's not lots of current stuff that I enjoy, nor to say that I cannot appreciate any kind of moral nuance. And in fact, in my own writing, there are all sorts of characters with moral foibles. But I'm still clear about the fact that good is always better than evil.
Michael, out of curiosity, do you enjoy just science fiction movies and films, or have you read much text science fiction?

I actually have never seen Little House, but I will Agree about the modern star trek stuff. I liked the new movies but the new shows, I am very picky about liking. Seldom has a new star trek show came out that has been good the last 7 or so years. Thats not to say that none of the classic star trek movies or shows had their bad moments too. Quite few of the older stuff are just terrible too but they have a "Charm" to them that lacks in the new shows. To this day, nothing has been as good as Deep Space Nine or Next Generation, well Next Generations later seasons as that shows first 2 to 3 seasons were also sort of lacking in quality. Sort of have to grunt your way through until it gets good lol.

Thank you, I will check in and let you know once I watch BSG. I may have to place it on the backburner for a bit as I am still getting through a few shows.
I am actually watching Little House on the Prairie right now. That is a show I thought I would never watch in a million years. It was before my time, but it would still show up sometimes on the TV when I was a kid and I loathed the theme music back then.
It took modern entertainment to lose almost all of it's wholesomeness for me to go back in time to find entertainment with better values, and I decided upon giving this show a chance. Little House turned out to be much better and sometimes even far deeper than I expected it to be. I am on Season 7 now. I am starting to see the quality drop off a little bit in these later seasons.
I liked the Expanse a lot and I recommend it. Obviously Star Trek was great back in the day. Not modern Trek though.

I can understand that good vs evil thing. Thats why I love lord of the rings so much and JRR Tolkiens works. Battlestar on the other hand, there is no good or evil. Its all survivial. Even the "protagonists" of the show are not inherently evil, and you will catch yourself empathizing with them. Battlestar came out back when TV show has LONG seasons as apposed to now when everything is so cookie cutter length. BSG is a binge show. IF you watch it, please do check in with your thoughts on it. Would love to know! Its sci fi grounded in reality, with real human moral conflict and emotion. Its the least "fantasy" sci fi out there other than the expanse or star trek.

Mr. Baldamort,
It's hard for me to watch a reaction if I haven't seen the movie or show before. I think the main reason why reactions are fun is because the movie or show gave you an experience and you want to see if someone else has a similar experience. I don't have an experience if I haven't seen the movie yet.
Thanks for the tips on Fandango. I don't have that but will look into it.
I will add that there was a time when entertainment always had clear lines of what is good and what is bad. At some point entertainment switched perspectives and began going the more complex route of blurring the lines between right and wrong, good and bad.
When this first happened, it was refreshing and interesting. I was all on board for this, but over time it got old.

Troy,
Yes, the enjoyment a lot of people have for BG is piquing my interest. Especially since it is Sci-Fi. I love Sci-Fi but it is one of those genre's that seems to be done poorly more often than done well. I will have to give BG a shot.
I did see GoT as it came out. I read the books around 2011ish and was so pumped for the show. The show was done SO WELL until they passed the books up. After that it started slowly falling off, and then fell off completely at the end. It's worth watching all of the way through, but the way it fell apart in the final 2 seasons left few people satisfied and far more disappointed.
The GoT reactions is probably the main reason I became a Patron here. Since I am perfectly happy seeing the YouTube versions of reactions, I really only had two reasons to become a Patron. One was GoT. The other was simply that Dasha seems like a really cool girl and I am doing well enough in my life to give back to her by going the highest tier of patronage. I am still perfectly fine just following YouTube Reactions, but I like feeling as if I am helping her out in some small way.

I actually enjoy watching shows with reactors I also havnt seen. I think its adds to the enjoyment of watching something for the first time with somebody lol. Anyway about Battlestar
Im watching all of Battlestar on Fandango. There is the Two episode Pilot mini series first then the start of the series.
1. This show tests the human limit of morality and blurs the lines between right and wrong.
2. Every single fight is not only exciting but this show makes space battles seem DEADLY and unforgettable.
3. This show was the new standard of sci fi. Granted the CGI is dated but that is just the culprit of its time and budget. Does not take away from the show at all.
This show is the most realistic depiction of how a functioning navy would be like in space. The cast and crew consists of actual navy veterans to give guidance on terminology, look and feel of a working navy. This show is a modern depiction of the classic 70s show written by veterans of the old show and it not only captured new audiences but it also reeled in lovers of the classic. I think any sci fi lover should watch this show 100% You wont ever forget it. There was no other sci fi as good as this show until Amazons "The Expanse" came out which set the new bar, but also took inspiration from Battlestar Galactica.
And no, its "Not made for modern audiences" this show does not hold back punches. Its almost like Game of Thrones in space, but not rated R. Lots of politics, lots of nuance, lots of crazy shit.

Yeah, I am pretty left out when it comes to this Battlestar Galactica and game of thrones stuff, as I have seen neither yet, so there's a big chunk of the patreon material that I haven't really been able to watch. But I know that a lot of people enjoy it, so I'm willing to take one for the team, so to speak. I am only familiar with Battlestar Galactica from the 1970s TV show, but I know people speak very highly of the modern incarnation. And yeah, I also prefer a traditional depiction. Much like Brian wilson, I was not made for these times...π

Patrons, I have never seen Battlestar Galactica. I have been avoiding the reactions to it because it seems to be a well liked show and there is no sense in seeing someone's reaction to something that I haven't seen yet.
What platform is this on? I like good sci-fi and how stories used to be, with the traditional hero's journey story arc. Is this show like that or is it more traditional?

Hello Dasha, Do you think for fun midway through this series or after it you might watch an original series episode?
